A framework for assessing how advanced an organization's AI governance program is across key dimensions.
An AI maturity model provides a structured way to evaluate where an organization stands in its AI governance journey and what it needs to do next. Maturity is typically assessed across multiple dimensions:
- Visibility: Can you see what AI tools are in use, by whom, and for what purpose?
- Oversight: Do you have processes to evaluate, approve, and review AI tools?
- Control: Are there technical and policy controls enforced across your AI landscape?
- Reporting: Can you demonstrate program maturity and compliance to stakeholders?
Organizations typically progress from ad-hoc (no formal program) through defined (documented policies), managed (active monitoring and enforcement), to optimized (continuous improvement and strategic AI enablement).
Why it matters
A maturity assessment is the fastest way to identify gaps and prioritize investment. It turns a vague sense of 'we need to do something about AI governance' into a specific, actionable plan.
