Human-in-the-loop (HITL) refers to any AI system or process where a human must review, validate, or approve the AI's output before it takes effect. In enterprise AI governance, HITL applies at multiple levels:

    • Tool approval: A human reviewer evaluates and approves AI tools before they're deployed
    • Output review: Critical AI-generated content (customer communications, financial analysis, code) is reviewed by a human before use
    • Exception handling: AI systems escalate edge cases or low-confidence decisions to human operators
    • Policy enforcement: Security teams review and act on shadow AI discoveries rather than relying on automated blocking alone

The EU AI Act requires human oversight for high-risk AI systems, making HITL a compliance requirement in many contexts.

    Why it matters

HITL is the bridge between AI capability and organizational trust. It lets organizations adopt AI tools faster because there's a safety net — decisions don't go unchecked.
