A centralized inventory of all AI tools evaluated, approved, or in use within an organization.
An AI catalog (also called an AI registry or AI inventory) is a structured database of every AI tool, service, and feature that has been discovered, evaluated, or approved within an organization. A well-maintained catalog typically tracks:
- Tool name, vendor, and category
- Current status (approved, under review, denied, discovered/unreviewed)
- Risk score and compliance assessment
- Data handling and privacy practices
- Who requested it and which departments use it
- Review history and approval decisions
- Associated controls and policies
The catalog serves as the single source of truth for an organization's AI landscape — it answers the question "what AI are we using?" at any point in time.
Why it matters
When a regulator, auditor, or board member asks "what AI tools does this organization use?" the catalog is the answer. Without one, that question triggers weeks of manual investigation.
